Questions, requests and complaints about how we handle personal data can be sent to contact@unum.com.br with the subject line “Privacy request”.

Unum is an independent editorial website. It is not a bank or a lender, it does not submit applications on your behalf and it does not pass your data to financial providers. When you click on a product, you go to the provider’s official website, and any data you give there is the responsibility of that provider.

We collect this data through the website itself, through cookies and similar technologies, and from the emails you send us. We do not ask for identity documents, bank details, income or credit information, and we do not intentionally collect sensitive personal data.

You do not have to give us any personal data to read this website. Providing your contact details when you email us is voluntary, but without them we cannot reply to you. If you block cookies that are not strictly necessary, the website still works, but ads may be less relevant to you.

4. Advertising

Unum is funded by advertising served by third-party networks, including Google (Google AdSense and Google Ad Manager), and, where indicated in the settings panel, by other advertising partners. These networks and their partners, and the audience data platform Lotame, may use cookies and identifiers to show you ads based on your visits to this and other websites, according to the choices available to you. If you turn off personalised ads, you may still see ads, but they will not be based on your interests.

You can find out how Google uses information from sites that use its services at https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites and turn off personalised Google ads at https://myadcenter.google.com/.

We do not make decisions based solely on automated processing that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.

5. Cookies

The cookies and similar technologies we use, who sets them and how long they last are listed in our Cookie Policy. You can delete or block cookies in your browser. If you block strictly necessary cookies, parts of the website may not work.

6. Who we share your data with

We do not sell your personal data for money. We share it only as needed with:

  • Service providers that host the website (Google LLC, through Google Cloud, United States), deliver content (Cloudflare, Inc., United States), provide security, email and audience measurement (including our own measurement tool, with servers in the United States), acting on our behalf and under our instructions.

We transfer personal data outside Kenya only as permitted by sections 48 and 49 of the Data Protection Act, 2019, with appropriate safeguards and, where the law requires it, your consent. Google is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, and our hosting and content delivery providers, Lotame and our own measurement tool are bound by binding contractual safeguards for your information. • Emails you send us: up to 2 years.
  • Other data collected through cookies: for the period shown for each cookie in the Cookie Policy or the settings panel, or set by the third party.

When these periods end, we delete or de-identify the data.

9. Your rights

Under the Data Protection Act, 2019, you have the right to:

  • be informed of the use to which your personal data is to be put;
  • access your personal data that we hold;
  • object to the processing of all or part of your personal data, including for direct marketing;

If we need to verify your identity, we will ask only for what is strictly necessary. Exercising your rights is free. We will respond within 30 days of receiving your request; if we need more time, we will tell you why within those 30 days.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you may lodge a complaint with Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), Britam Tower, 12th and 13th Floor, Hospital Road, Upper Hill, Nairobi (P.O. Box 30920-00100, Nairobi); email info@odpc.go.ke; website https://www.odpc.go.ke, where complaints can be filed online.

10. Children

This website is intended for adults aged 18 and over. Under Kenyan law a child is a person under 18. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If we find that we have, we will delete it.

11. Security

We use technical and organisational measures appropriate to the risk, such as encrypted connections, access controls and system monitoring. If a personal data breach occurs that is likely to put your rights at risk, we will handle it and notify the authority and the people affected as the law requires.

12. Third-party websites

Our content links to the official websites of banks and other providers. Those websites have their own privacy policies, for which Unum is not responsible.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. The current version will always be published on this page with its date, and we will publish a notice of significant changes on the website before they take effect.
